Where Can I Buy Modems?

A Modem, short for Modulator-Demodulator, is a piece of hardware that enables a desktop computer to communicate with other computers over the phone line. A Modem is needed, as computer information is stored digitally, whereas the phone lines use analogue to transfer data. So basically a modem transfers digital to analogue and then back again.

There are wide ranges of modems and most can be separated into categories of speed. The speed is recorded in bps (Bits Per Second). The most common faster modems run at 57,600bps although there are faster modems on the market. A downside to modems is that they can only receive data at the same rate it is being sent so no matter how fast your modem you will not always receive data quicker as it depends on the modem sending out the data. This also works if you are sending out data.

Another type of Modem is a data/voice modem which allows you to transfer and receive data the same as normal but also has a switch on it which allows the user to speak into the modem like a normal telephone as it has a built in loudspeaker and microphone.

Most Computers nowadays all have built in modems although upgraded ones are available to buy on the market and can be plugged in to the computer externally. In order to do this your computer will require an RS-232 Port which are also standard on most of today’s computers.
